The European Union might “act quickly and firmly” in response to what it calls “unjustified” travel bans imposed by the United States on five Europeans working on combating online hate and misinformation, an EU official has said.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Coercion’
European leaders such as the French president charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the travel bans were placed on figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact legislation governing American tech companies.
“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to suppress American viewpoints they oppose,” stated the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of censorship beyond its borders.”
Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in criticizing the move.
The bans were imposed this week against an ex-European commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, as well as four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is seen by Washington as a type of speech restriction, while European leaders argue the regulations are necessary to control hate speech and falsehoods.
